The Athanasian Creed (Quicumque vult)
.
V. Whosoever wishes to be saved, needs above all to hold the Catholic Faith;
R. Unless each one preserves this whole and inviolate, he will without a doubt perish in eternity.
V. Now the Catholic Faith is this; that we worship One God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity.
R. Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the substance. * For there is one Person of the Father, * another of the Son, * another of the Holy Ghost. * But the Godhead of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all
One; * the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal.
V. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost.
R. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, the Holy Ghost uncreate. * The Father incomprehensible, the Son
incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. * The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost
eternal. * And yet they are not three eternals, but one eternal. * As also they are not three uncreates, nor three
incomprehensibles; but one uncreate, and one incomprehensible. * In like manner the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Ghost almighty. * And yet not three almighties, but one almighty.
V. So the Father is God, the Son God, and the Holy Ghost God.
R. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. * So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Ghost is Lord. * And yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. * For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to
acknowledge every Person by Himself to be God and Lord; * so we are forbidden by the Catholic religion, to say there are three Gods, or three Lords.* The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten. * The Son is from the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. * The Holy Ghost is from the Father and the Son, not made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. * So there is one Father, not three Fathers; * one Son, not three Sons; * one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. * And in this Trinity, there is nothing before or after, nothing greater or less; * but the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal.
V. So that in all things, as is aforesaid, the Unity is to be worshipped in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity.
R. He, therefore, that will be saved, must thus think of the Trinity.
V. Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation, that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
R. Now the right faith is, that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is both God and Man. * He is God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the world; * and He is man of the substance of His mother, born in the world; * Perfect God and perfect man; * of reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. * Equal to the Father according to His Godhead; * and less than the Father according to His Manhood.
V. Who, although He be both God and Man, yet He is not two, but one Christ;
R. One, not by the conversion of the Godhead into flesh, * but by the taking of the Manhood unto God; * One altogether, not by confusion of substance, * but by unity of Person. * For as the reasonable soul and the flesh is one man, * so God and Man is one Christ. * Who suffered for our salvation, * descended into hell, * rose again the third day from the dead. * He ascended into heaven; * He sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; * from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. * At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, * and shall give an account of their own works. * And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; * and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire.
V. This is the Catholic faith,
R. Which except a man believe faithfully and steadfastly, * he cannot be be saved. * Amen.
.
V. Glory be to the Father... R. As it was in the beginning...
.
Novena Prayer.
.
V. Hail, O St. Athanasius,
R. Model of virtue, most brave defender of the Faith!
V. Hail, thou rock of the Patriarchs!
R. Sweet-voiced trumpet, * admirable mind, * most
persuasive tongue, * axe that felled the forest of heresies
* and burned them with the fire of the Holy Ghost, * most firm pillar and unshakeable tower.
V. O Holy Doctor, thou armed the Church with the divine dogmas of orthodoxy;
R. Thou didst keep the faith O glorious St. Athanasius, * and justly won a crown by thy labors.
V. In thy flesh, O blessed Patriarch,
R. Thou filled up the sufferings of Christ, * suffering many
persecutions, * even from among those counted within the Church.
V. O God-bearing Saint,
R. With the staff of thy teachings, * thou drove heretical
wolves far from the Church of Christ. * Thou didst encompass and defend her with the fortifications of thy words * and presented her sound and safe to Christ. * V. Beseech God, therefore, that He would deliver from perversion and all dangers us who faithfully celebrate thine ever venerable memory. And in particular...
